New player who started game as Holy Nation Citizens, what do I do now?
Main Post:
I've assembled a group of 6 people and we've literally been doing nothing but copper mining, stuffing it in a large backpack, and running back and forth between Holy Nation cities for hours. Everyone has a decent 25-35 strength now.
It's day 75 for us. Everyone is fully armed with standard grade armor and weaponry, we have about 100K cats to spare, and I really want to start exploring and building my own base, maybe pick up some additional people to train as fighters and explore the world outside the Holy Nation territory. That being said, I was roaming around on one character and he went a little bit too far, and when he returned he was promptly beaten and enslaved by guards for running away (?).
I wasn't sure what happened afterwards because everyone in my squad was arrested, two became enslaved, and I had to reload an older save. Any tips for how to get into base building? Do I have to stick with Holy Nation territory, and where do I get building materials?
Top Comment: If you don't mind doing prayer day, you can go into Okran's Pride to build a base. I have not build base ever in my time with Kenshi so I can't tell you whether it's safe there, but people like there since it has fertility and Paladin patrols pass by could come to your aid. But before that you should get a house in one of the towns and start researching. You will unlock things like quarry, mine, processing stuff etc. So you can work autonomously once you get going. But you will need some materials to get started. You can usually find it in General Store and Mechanical Store. Although I am not sure whether Mechanical store exists in HN due to their view of technology. I am not sure, but I think if you start as a Holy Nation Citizen, you can't leave HN territory or you turn into an outlaw and you are no longer welcome back. The rest of your squad got beaten probably cause they went to help the one who was being attacked. You should have them all on Passive so if you get attacked by guards only one guy from your squad gets beaten and arrested/enslaved. Anyway, I think Okran's Pride is good place to get into base building for when you eventually decide to settle for late game and want to know all things

Holy Order I founded is charging me for it's use- anyone else?
Main Post:
So here's the situation. I love Holy Orders because it's a way of raising men at arms without having to raise your whole 70k army. (I detest the change that stops MaA from being raised first). I found and use Holy Orders whenever possible.
So I way playing as the Yapaniya in India, founded and used my Holy Order. I created a new faith, changing tenants so I could wage Holy Wars. I founded a new Holy Order afterwards.
When I would go to use this new Holy Order, it would be indicated as "free" to use. However, after raising them I would be charged some 500 piety. Super annoying.
So I revoke that Holy Order and found a new one. Same issue. Doesn't seem like I'll be able to get around the issue in this play through.
Has anyone else encountered an issue, after founding a new religion, where newly founded Holy Orders incorrectly charge you piety for their use?
Top Comment: They cost piety if they are already hired by someone else. You can hire them for free, but to "steal" them it costs piety. Also, the patron is the first king or higher level liege above them. So, for example, if you are an emperor and their headquarters are inside one of your vassal king's realm, it belongs to them instead. Also, your men at arms will raise on day 1 if you are raising troops at your capital where your men at arms are.
Founding Holy Order Sucks
Main Post:
So I founded a holy order and thought wow, how cool is this? Well there are 3 benefits to owning a holy order.
- You can call on them for free to fight in holy wars.
- You can borrow gold from them.
- You can send your sons to take the vows and clear them from succession (i think?).
What benefits have I taken advantage of since founding the Knights Templar? Absolutely none. The other Catholic rulers AI in the game instantly hires them as soon as they are available and in my 300+ years save game I have never been able to hire their services even once. I think this should be patched by Paradox to give the player some sort of notification when they become available and a few months leeway from being able to be hired by AI rulers where the patron (you) are the only person available to hire them for a short time. It's a huge bummer that I invested so much into them to never be able to use their services. Makes being their patron kind of useless imo.
Also I've never used the other 2 benefits as I've got a fairly stable kingdom and there are some serious risks with borrowing gold from them because they act like a Chicago mob boss loan shark according to the Dev blog. Being able to give them one of my sons seems very useful but I typically have married them off to someone for alliance power early on and totally forget to try having them take the vows; my fault really, but I'm sure other people are making that same mistake as well and not getting the full benefits of founding the order.

Alternatively I founded the taltoist holy order as the arpads, and they were a 1k men private army that were my vassals. I only saw my vassals hire them once
