Music Reviews: Holy Money by Swans released in 1986. Genre: No Wave. This is certainly a sister album to the previous record (if the remade versions of Fool and Money is Flesh didn’t tip you off), but it takes what worked from Greed and elevates it to new heights. For example, let’s look at the rerecorded ... read more ... As an overall experience, "Holy Money" is definitely an improvement to "Greed", but it's still kinda a bit of a slog to get through.I'm honestly running out of things to say about these early albums cause there's honestly nothing else TO say about these early albums. As an overall package, the consistency of "Holy Money" is definitely more prevalent and it feels more like a real album and experience. With a slight more industrial influence present on this record, overall Holy Money is a brother to Greed and in that sense has the same strengths and weaknesses, it is bleak to the point of even morbid but doesn't necessary justify its use of repetition fully.Holy Money well documents the continuing transformation of Swans into a more complex, intriguing beast.

Released 27 March 1986 on K.422 (catalog no. KCC 3; Vinyl LP). Genres: Industrial Rock, Punk. Rated #541 in the best albums of 1986. Featured peformers: Michael Gira (lyrics, sampler, producer, design), Norman Westberg (guitar), Swans (music), Jorgé Estabon (engineering, assistant producer), Me Company (artwork).Gira's lyrics speak to universal truths about humanity ("Money is easy to get out of your flesh, flesh is easy to get when you work for your money") pounded into brilliantly compact lyrical packages. In short, "Holy Money" creates one of the most uniform and organized ideas about the world as it exists that I have heard in modern music. The extreme violence and noise found on Cop and Young God honestly gets pretty old, so I’m glad Michael went for a cleaner, yet still dark and inaccessible sound on this album. Holy Money has a quality to it that I can’t describe, almost fun, but in a dark way, and calmer, again in a dark way? From the more upbeat “Money is Flesh” to the more harsh “Coward”, there is a good balance of songs. Not everyone will get this, but I have synesthesia and this album looks sick. It really adds a lot to the experience. I had listened to all the songs on the album many times, and I thought they were alright, but after my first full listen, it really clicked. This album has grown on me a lot. Favorite Track: A Screw (Holy Money) Least Favorite Track: You Need Me Overall Rating: 8.9/10

Can Christians, who have a theology of incarnation, see ways that money can be baptized and become holy? Money is intended to flow. It becomes less holy when it is stops flowing. Perhaps money is like anxiety. My colleague Michael Nel used to say that anxiety is like manure: it stops things up if it’s stuck in one place. And it fertilizes if you spread it around. If we view money with the potential to be holy then we can be in a different relationship with it. Instead of the fear and anxiety and greed and longing (all of which I have felt), we can gratefully appreciate the flow of money into and out of our lives.Holy doesn’t have to mean wholly utilitarian. It’s been a great pleasure in my life in recent years to spend money on art made by artists I know. And yet: can Christians, who have a theology of incarnation, step away from dualism? Can we see ways that money can be baptized and become holy?

SUMMARY: Rating: 7/10 Favorites: “You Need Me”, “A Screw (Holy Money)”, “Fool (#2)” Least Favorite: “Money Is Flesh (#2)”… Despite how closely related Greed and Holy Money are, I think the latter is actually a more prominent turning point for the band. Not to say that it’s necessarily a better album, but that it better represents this phase of Swans’ evolution. The Time Is Money (Bastard) single / EP actually beat Greed to the punch of showcasing new instrumentation like synths and piano, so what is there left for Holy Money to prove? The band’s output up until this point has been “fascinating”, “captivating”, “uneasy”, “cathartic”, and “immersive”… but never ”beautiful”. But even behind the harrowing veil of its possible meanings and despondent production, the underlying beauty of “You Need Me” makes it clear that this band can no longer be contained within the labels it had previously accrued. This one-two punch of important tracks quickly establishes Holy Money’s unique status in the Gira pantheon, and the rest the album cements that status by exhibiting the most sonic diversity of any release yet.Oh, and I guess “Money Is Flesh (#2)” is also here, but it’s a baffling inclusion that hardly warrants discussion. Regardless, this juxtaposition of various styles across the tracklist make Holy Money a uniquely unpredictable listening experience, as well as a rudimentary herald of Swans’ ever-expanding musical palette. The physical releases of Greed and Holy Momey feature 2 different versions while digitally both versions sound the same. Money is Flesh 1 is in 4/4 and the mixing sounds very subdued compared to the Holy Monry version.

They were to be or do nothing that was not under His inspiration and leading. In everything they were to move and live and have their being “in the Spirit,” to be wholly spiritual men. Hence it followed as a necessity that their possessions and property, that their money and its appropriations were subjected to His rule too, and that their income and expenditure were animated by new, hitherto unknown, principles. And Barnabas having a field, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the Apostles’ feet.” Without any command or instruction, in the joy of the Holy Spirit, the joy of the love which He had shed abroad in their heart, the joy of the heavenly treasures that now made them rich, they spontaneously parted with their possessions and placed them at the disposal of the Lord and His servants. It would not have been a full salvation that did not provide complete deliverance from the power of money. The story of Pentecost assures us that when the Holy Spirit comes in His fulness into the heart, then earthly possessions lose their place in it, and money is only valued as a means of proving our love and doing service to our Lord and our fellow men.The secret of true giving is the joy of the Holy Ghost. The complaint in the Church as to the terrible need of more money for God’s work, as to the terrible disproportion between what God’s people spend on themselves and devote to their God, is universal.

It argues that morality predates religion. Early humans practiced kindness and cooperation for survival. Religion later branded these acts as divine commands. However, atheists also demonstrate morality. Kindness exists independently of religious beliefs. It took credit for every good deed, slapped its logo on kindness, and threatened damnation for colouring outside the lines. Meanwhile, many atheists kept quietly returning lost wallets and not kicking puppies, much to the confusion of those who believed virtue required a subscription. But the moral compass predates holy GPS.

And, if a born-again believer accepts that and starts talking to God about God’s money, instead of our money, it can make all the difference. In today's Making Disciples Letter, Al Stanford tells us what Jesus says about riches.Jesus was on the way to the cross and had just finished talking to a man who had great possessions. Something was preventing him from following the Lord, and he went away from Jesus, sorrowful. In this case, it was his money that was keeping him from following Jesus.

A later compilation released in 1992, Greed / Holy Money, combined Holy Money (barring "A Screw (Holy Money)", though "A Screw (Holy Money) (Mix)" was listed as this) and Greed (barring "Fool" and "Money Is Flesh", however "Fool (#2)" and "Money Is Flesh (#2)" were listed as these, respectively), as well as the entirety of the A Screw single and an abridged version of "Time Is Money (Bastard) (Mix)" (listed as "Time Is Money (Bastard)") from the Time Is Money (Bastard) EP.AllMusic commented that Holy Money "well documents the continuing transformation of Swans into a more complex, intriguing beast." Trouser Press called it "more or less a twin to Greed; virtually identical in cover art and musical approach". Aaron Lariviere of Stereogum described Holy Money as a "transitional album", but called it "brilliant in [its] own right".This compilation, with its entirely re-organized track list, saw re-issue in 1999 in the double-disc set Cop/Young God / Greed/Holy Money, which included the Cop album and Young God EP.
